The UNM 21 Club

Archie BahmThe UNM 21 Club was formed at the University of New Mexico in 1949 by Archie J. Bahm, a Professor of Philosophy.

Professor Bahm hoped to establish a dialog between each of the 21 departments that existed at that time.

His hope was fulfilled and continues with a select group of faculty and administrators who have distinguished themselves by their teaching and/or research.

Typically four meetings of the 21 Club are held during the academic year. Membership is by invitation.

Last Meeting

Our last 21 Club meeting was on Tuesday, April 29. At this meeting Bernd Bassaleck told us about the changes in Iraq which he has personally experienced since growing up there in the 1950’s. The talk was well attanded and precipitated much discussion.

Next Meeting

At our first meeting of this semester on Tuesday, November 11 at 5:30 pm, club member Ted Parnell, Dean Emeritus of the UNM School of Law, will discuss the work he and others have done on law reform efforts in the developing world. Ted is an internationally renowned expert on this interesting and extremely complex topic.

The title of Ted’s talk is:

The Law and Development Movement (1960–2025): Activities, Assumptions and a Personal Assessment

The abstract for Ted’s talk and details about the meeting are here.

This is a unique opportunity to gain insight into an activity having world-wide repercussions about which many know very little, so please plan to attend.
