The UNM 21 Club
The UNM 21 Club was formed at the University of New Mexico in 1949 by Archie J. Bahm, a Professor of Philosophy.
Professor Bahm hoped to establish a dialog between each of the 21 departments that existed at that time.
His hope was fulfilled and continues with a select group of faculty and administrators who have distinguished themselves by their teaching and/or research.
Typically four meetings of the 21 Club are held during the academic year. Membership is by invitation.
Last Meeting
Our last 21 Club meeting was on Tuesday, April 29. At this meeting Bernd Bassaleck told us about the changes in Iraq which he has personally experienced since growing up there in the 1950’s. The talk was well attanded and precipitated much discussion.
Next Meeting
Our first meeting of the 25'-26 academic year, at 5:30 pm on Tuesday, November 11, will feature a presentation by club member Ted Parnell, Dean Emeritus of the UNM School of Law. Ted will discuss the work he and others have done in regards to law reform efforts in the developing world. Ted is an internationally renowned expert on this interesting and extremely complex topic that includes encouraging economic development within a variety of cultural and political norms by creating legal frameworks, insuring access to justice, and strengthening judicial systems – to name just a few.
The title of Ted’s talk is:
“A summary of the presumptions behind law reform efforts in Africa (1960s and 70s) Asia (1990s) and Central Asia and Afghanistan (2000s). Both the champions and the critics got it wrong---and so did I”.
Another announcement will be made in early October with more details regarding Ted’s talk and the social and dinner that follows. At that time an RSVP will be requested.
