"The Magic of Oaxaca: Teaching Traditional Mexican Medicine"

Dr. Terry Crowe, Professor in the School of Medicine has coordinated an interprofesional course in Oaxaca, Mexico for the past 10 years. This dynamic course focuses on the practice of traditional medicine throughout the southern Mexican state. Indigenous healers are the teachers of this course as they share their knowledge with 12 to 15 students (both undergraduate and graduate) each year. The course provides the opportunity for dialogue with several experienced traditional healthcare healers (curanderos/as). Students can participate in traditional healing experiences including a special Temazcal (steam bath) and a Limpia (ritualistic cleansing ceremony). Five mornings are devoted to intensive instruction in Spanish (individualized across all levels). Dr. Crowe has conducted 2 research studies (qualitative and quantitative) to explore the outcomes of participating in this intensive international learning experience.

Dr. Terry K. Crowe founded the Occupational Therapy Program in the UNM School of Medicine in 1992. Previously she was a professor at the University of Washington. The UNM Graduate Program graduates 24 occupational therapists each year and has a 100% pass rate on the National Certification Exam over the 21 years of graduates. Dr. Crowe is an active researcher, invested teacher and international presenter. She currently has a Fulbright Senior Specialist Award and completed a Fulbright visit in Latvia last spring.
