Portuguese speaking immigrants in the US and their impact on Portuguese programs, by Margo Milleret

When: Mon, Feb 15 2016 6:00pm

Where: UNM Faculty Club

The 21 Club wishes to thank our speaker, Professor Margo Milleret, who retired from the Dept. of Spanish and Portuguese in June of 2015

While the heated debate about immigrants and immigration reform is underway, it might be helpful to appreciate the value of immigrants to our understanding of foreign languages and cultures. This talk will look at Portuguese-speaking immigrants in the US, including their countries of origin, their histories, their locations, and their contributions to the study of Portuguese in higher education. The landscape of immigration is not stable, homogeneous, or even visible, as this talk will show, based on research in the greater Boston area.

Margo Milleret retired from the Dept. of Spanish and Portuguese in June of 2015. She has been interested in Portuguese speakers in the US for some time and taught a course on the subject in spring semester of 2015. Her other research interests are Portuguese program development, and Brazilian theater. She is editing a book of essays for Portuguese instructors.
