The 21 Club wishes to thank our speaker, Professor Kerry Howe, Professor of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, for an excellent presentation.

Everyone knows about climate change from what they hear on the news. Many people know the basics: burning fossil fuels increases the carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere and carbon dioxide warms the planet, but the details of how these things work might be sketchy. This presentation answers some basic questions about the science of carbon dioxide and climate change:

• Why does it get hot inside a greenhouse or parked car?
• How does carbon dioxide trap heat?
• Do we burn enough fossil fuels to affect the carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere?

This presentation will also touch on the United States’s carbon dioxide production relative to other developed countries, the impact of environmental performance on a nation’s economy, and what we need to do next.

BIO:

Dr. Kerry J. Howe is a Professor in environmental engineering at the University of New Mexico and Director of UNM’s Center for Water and the Environment. He is a registered professional engineer and board certified by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists. He has more than 30 years of experience in environmental engineering with a focus of treatment technologies to remove contaminants from water for the municipal water supply. He teaches a class on sustainable engineering that is the basis for the material in this presentation.
